Book Writing Help!!

I can't believe I am putting this into motion. It was laid on my heart about two yrs ago. I remember the day so specifically, I was walking down our hallway and all of a sudden I had this laid on my heart to write a children's picture book. REALLY! ME, why me, I don't know how to write, never written anything exciting in my life...
Lord ,why would you want me to do this???????? Ok, yes I am questioning God, not right I know, but sure don't understand this one...
I have NO idea where to begin, I need YOUR help...Has anyone written a children's book (targeted to 3-8yr olds)?  If you have, where do I start, where do you find an illustrator that will match with what you have in your head?  Who will publish...Oh man so many questions HELP!!!.

I already have the character he is a Boxer Dog named Bud a  day in his life..

If you have any suggestions please let me know. I surely would appreciate it..

Thank you so much,

Sherry

  1. Don't know anything about your genre but you can always go to book stores and look at the publishers of books already there. At least, it's a start. You could also Google children's book publishers.

  4. Hello - found your blog through 6 in the nest blog hop. I am in the process of writing a children's book. Highly recommend Ann Whiteford Paul's book, Writing Picture Books. You may also want to join your local children's writing society. Lastly don't worry about an illustrator yet, get your story down, tighten, and tighten some more and in a few months get a professional editor to review. Good luck. Come follow me when you get a chance.

  7. Hello! I am an author, not of children's books, but of cookbooks. It's not the same, I know but I am learning a bit how it works. If you've never published before the publishers won't give you a glance until you have a completed manuscript, so start there. If you are not the illustrator and don't have one but are chosen to be published, your publisher will know who to hire for it. There is actually another children's author in the wandering wednesday blog hop, maybe she could answer some questions too. Good luck!!!
I'm following you from the hop. Please follow me back at Meatless Meals For Meat Eaters

  9. Wishing you lots of luck!!! I don't know anything about children's publishing, unfortunately. But I know the most important part is getting your story on paper! Most publishers will assign an illustrator later on!

  10. I haven't had a children's picture book published but from my time in writing circles I've heard that publishers actually prefer to choose the illustrator themselves anyway. Mainly because they often have preferred and trusted illustrators on their books. Obviously this is different if you are an illustrator yourself and want to do both.

There is an organisation called "Society of Children's Book writers and illustrators" to be found at www.scbwi.org who are meant to be leaders at supporting writers/illustrators by way of peer groups, forums and courses. You may have already discovered them but if not then they would be definitely worth checking out.

Hope that helps a little. But most importantly enjoy writing the story!
